"She's doing quite well. She's made friends, she's doing well in her studies. Maybe she has a little problem understanding me speak in Bahasa Melayu, but other than that, no. She doesn't seem to have any problems," explained Miss Zalia Harun. Laila nodded, but couldn't meet the young teacher's gaze.
She laughed a little, but only to comfort herself from being too nervous and speechless. "I don't know how to say this.." said she, waving her hand around. "..but it's been so hard for her. As a mother, I'm just here to ask if she's okay. Not that I'm intending on taking too much of your time. It's just that, sometimes, Sofea seems so happy and excited coming home from school. But then again there are other times when she comes home and keeps to herself, and the next thing I know she doesn't want to come out of bed the next morning 'cause she says she hates coming to school. And the only way she says she wants to go to school is if her father sends her and by all means I know that's just preposterous cause he's-" she hesitated. She knew she had just blurted out too much. She looks down at her hands. "I'm sorry," she murmurs. "I just can't help myself. She's never been too much trouble for me, and that's why I worry sometimes that something's bothering her but I can't see it,"
"She's fine. As you said, she comes to school sometimes with an unhappy face, but I'm positive that her friend, Munirah, the one she's always playing and holding hands with, is a good influence on her. Munirah is also a good listener and I can see that she's a very nice girl. Don't worry, Mrs. Laila. Sofea is doing great,"
said Miss Zalia, gently placing her hand forward.
Listening to those words, were like music to her ears. Laila closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and managed a smile. A forced one, but still sincere. "Thank you," she mouthed . The words just couldn't come out. Miss Zalia nodded, and with that, Laila stood up, excusing herself, and said thanks once more.
As Laila walks away, Zalia closes the door behind her, and just leans there for a while. She keeps seeing Sofea's beautiful sweet face in her mind's eye.
